Having insured coastal properties for the last 43 years, Sullivan’s Island native and owner of the family-run Schirmer Insurance Group, Sam Schirmer, has helped generations of homeowners protect their homes and businesses to avoid destruction from hurricanes and other disasters. He urged residents to take precautions and have a plan during the peak of hurricane season before it’s too late. More than anything, Schirmer said, it’s important to prepare in advance for the aftermath of a catastrophic event. He advised taking pictures of every room in the house and inventorying possessions. Remove valuables such as money, jewelry and guns from the safe and pack them, along with photographs, documents and pets, as according to Schirmer, the threat of crime is higher after a devastating storm. For those who decide to stay and ride a storm out, it’s advisable to stock up on nonperishable food, water, ice and batteries, as well as a first aid kit; an AM/FM radio for listening to local updates; a solar pack for charging devices; and a handheld radio for communication, as cell towers and landlines could be down. To avoid any unpleasant surprises in the wake of the storm, it’s also a good idea to be aware of the size of your homeowner’s insurance deductible, because as Schirmer said, “If the amount of damage doesn’t exceed that, you as the homeowner are on the hook. For example, if a tree falls on the roof of your house, causing $10,000 in damage but the deductible is $20,000, you are responsible for paying 100% of the repairs.” In addition, before Hurricane Hugo hit in 1989, the price per square foot of coastal homes averaged about $50. The day after the storm, that number spiked to between $100 and $200. Now that the range is from $300 to $400, homeowners may have to adjust to $600 to $800 – or more – after the next big storm hits. To make sure those figures are covered, Schirmer reinforced how important it is to check with your insurance agent now to make sure higher prices are covered. He added, “Wind-driven rain can also be a huge issue, as not many people know that it may not be covered if it’s not included in the policy – and there may be separate adjusters if the policies are with different companies.” “Don’t just let it coast on autopilot,” advised Schirmer. “Update your policy with a local agent so they know how the deductible applies and how the process with adjusters works. Also, it’s important to have the adjuster’s name and contact information readily available so that if and when the time comes, you can contact them to help navigate the way forward.” To get ahead of the season and learn which policy will best protect your assets, call Schirmer Insurance Group directly at 843-881-4707 or visit sigsc. com and fill in the quote form.
