Councilman and community spark joy in local electrician By Julie Nestler COMMUNITY showcased recently when a group of Isle of Palms residents united to honor our beloved neighbor, William Burgis. Burgis, who moved to the island in 1957, has been a constant presence here outside of the 20 years he served in the Navy. Over the years, he has become known as the island's 'go-to electrician,' always willing to lend a hand to those in need. Despite his invaluable contributions, Burgis has relied on a bike as his primary means of transportation. Upon learning about Burgis’ situation, IOP Councilman Jimmy Ward took it upon himself to ensure Burgis had a safer and more reliable form of transportation. He organized a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for the cause, and nearly 40 community members generously contributed to support their neighbor. The campaign only took eight days. Amazing what can be done when fellow islanders come together for a common and great cause. The campaign fell a bit short of its goal, but that’s when Benji Farmery, another island resident and business owner, stepped up and donated the remaining amount needed to meet the target. Farmery’s kindness, which is always off the charts and goes well beyond what anyone can imagine, ensured that a golf cart, supplied by my family, was secured for Burgis. This community effort culminated on a memorable Friday afternoon, June 21, which also marked Burgis’ 79th birthday. In a joyous celebration at The Dinghy, the golf cart was presented to Burgis (complete with red bows, a weather cover and a fire extinguisher), symbolizing the community's appreciation and respect for a man who has dedicated so much of his life to serving others. The initiative was led by Ward, a dedicated public servant and pillar of our community, who always puts the needs of others before his own. A big thank you for always thinking of others, and to the community for quickly coming together to help get Burgis a reliable and safer form of transportation. This event stands as a testament to the power of community and the profound impact of collective kindness. It serves as a reminder that when neighbors come together with a shared purpose, they can create meaningful change and brighten the lives of those around them.
