The idea to give back to first responders was started by former Isle of Palms Mayor Jimmy Carroll and Dudley Spangler. They wanted the community to show their appreciation for first responders, who were away from their families during the holiday. Their idea grew from word of mouth to text, to a coordinated effort, aided by Alicia Zimov. Food is dropped off a day before and on Thanksgiving to IOPFD Station 1 and Station 2 and the Public Safety Building. But what about the first responders who are off on that day? They should receive love from the community too. So Julie Nestler started collecting money each year to feed them as well, purchasing gift cards from Acme Lowcountry Kitchen, IOPizza Co and the IOP Marina, which provide a generous discount. On a day when so many enjoy traditions with their families, the community came together to create a new tradition for those who spend their holiday working on our behalf.
