The VFW Post 3137, located at 1004 Ocean Blvd. next to The Windjammer is the only beachfront VFW bar in the entire country. VFW bars are significant because they provide a place of gathering and fellowship for veterans and their families. The VFW’s mission is to foster camaraderie among United States veterans of overseas conflicts, to serve our veterans, the military and our communities and to advocate on behalf of all veterans. VFW ensures that veterans are respected for their service, always receive their earned entitlements and are recognized for the sacrifices they and their loved ones have made on behalf of our country. There are two types of VFW memI bership. A comrade membership for qualifying veterans who served in a foreign war and an auxiliary membership for immediate family members of qualifying veterans who served in a foreign war. Additionally, those who are serving in active military areas are always welcome at any time. If you are not a member, the only way to gain entry is as a guest of a member. There is never a dull moment at the VFW Post 3137. Happy hour goes from 3- 6 p.m. and there is also Taco Tuesday, Italian night on Wednesday and share a dish on Sunday at 2 p.m. The daily highlights are the bartenders’ smiles, the freshly-made popcorn and the best hotdogs on the island. The VFW holds many events throughout the year, such as the Americanism Awards, Soldiers’ Angels, Toys for Tots, holiday festivities and an annual golf tournament. VFW members give back to the community by volunteering for other veterans’ organizations. Their core values are values that we in the community must carry within ourselves. The VFW always puts the interests of its members first; treats donors as partners in their cause; promotes patriotism; honors military service; ensures the care of veterans and their families and serves our community. If you have the opportunity to visit VFW Post 3137 as a member or a guest, take the time to look at the memorabilia that has been donated from families and veterans. This place is filled with love and support, an establishment where you can find men and women enjoying a cold beer, singing or watching the waves crash on the shore of Isle of Palms. Normal hours are Monday-Thursday 3-9 p.m. and Friday-Sunday noon to 9 p.m. Learn more at vfw3137.org. Behind the Bar VFW Post 3137: A place comrades call home By Maurice J. Frazier
