Dunes are important for many reasons and must be protected. When there’s a storm like a hurricane, the water level of the ocean rises, causing huge waves that go all the way up the beach. The dunes serve as a barrier to stop the water and without them the water would flow farther into the streets, flooding yards and damaging homes. The dunes also help to protect the beach by minimizing erosion. ACROSS 1. Apex 5. White poplar 10. Swiss-like cheese 14. Crispy squares cereal 15. Number system base 16. Shekel 17. Careen 18. The plants in the dunes have deep roots which help to hold the sand in place so that the ocean can’t carry as much away. Walking on the dunes might damage the plants and weaken their roots, which makes it easier for the dunes to wash away. As well as being important for the beach, they’re important for the wildlife that lives there, serving as a habitat for many creatures like rabbits, birds and even coyotes and a critical nesting area for loggerhead sea turtles. So next time you go to the beach, respect the dunes!
