Zach and Melody Gentz and their rescue pup, Hurricane, have made a habit of coming back year after year to the Isle of Palms for what they deem one of their favorite vacation spots. Married for three and a half years, the Gentzes met in grad school at Florida Atlan24 IslandVibesIOP.com Vacation Vibes Round of applause, ladies & Gentzes By Laura Fogarty tic University and have been together ever since. Currently, they live just outside of Greensboro, North Carolina, with Melody hailing from South Florida and Zach from Indiana. Among their list of favorite must-do adventures on the island is having breakfast at Acme Lowcountry Kitchen. The Gentz family first came to the Isle of Palms to visit Melody’s uncle while he was renting a home in the winter months to escape the cold of Boston. Escape the cold he did, with a beautiful rental from Dunes Properties that had ample space for Melody, Zach and their scruffy pup. Zach and Melody said they fell in love with the island and the surrounding Lowcountry and have been vacationing here ever since. Melody continued, “Charleston and the Isle of Palms has become one of our favorite spots to vacation and we are grateful to make the trip annually. We especially love how dog-friendly the area is. Although Hurricane isn’t a social butterfly, he does love the off-leash hours at the beach, and I love to see his little paw prints in the sand.” Hurricane is a large part of the Gentz family’s story, starting back in 2019 when they lived in Arizona. After browsing adoptable dogs for months, late one evening Melody found her perfect dog. She knew immediately she wanted to adopt Hurricane (at that time “Moppy”) and went to the shelter as soon as it opened the following morning to meet him. The Gentzes had a bit of a misstep on their way to the shelter to meet their new pup. “Turns out we went to the wrong shelter – they had an east valley and west valley location,” recalled Melody. “The other shelter was 30 minutes away and I wanted to give up because I was sure Moppy had been adopted by then and I didn’t want to be disappointed. Zach encouraged me not to give up hope and we drove to the other shelter. Thankfully, no one else was visiting Moppy so we were able to meet him. He ignored me but went straight to Zach. The volunteer said she never saw a dog bond so quickly before with someone.” Because of Hurricane Irma in 2017, Melody evacuated to Arizona to stay with a friend. While taking shelter from the storm, Melody fell completely in love with the area and knew she wanted to move to Arizona after grad school. “Without that experience, I never would have moved out to Arizona, and we would never have been fortunate enough to have Hurricane in our lives,” Melody added.
