IslandVibesIOP.com 24 Meet the Campbells. With seemingly limitless energy and an abundance of warmth, the Campbell family embraces island living with humble gratitude and reverence. Mike and Kathy, married for 32 years, are proud parents to daughters Jillian and Haley Mae. she is now able to use her amazing artistic skills by starting her own business as a nail technician. Haley Mae is an aspiring musician with numerous credits to her name, including over 30 million collective on-demand streams. Haley Mae can be found at the Isle of Palms Holiday Street Festival on Dec. 6 as the closing performer. Celebrating Haley Mae and her music is one of the Campbells’ Christmas traditions. Kathy elaborated, “We never did the Santa Claus thing or the tree. Instead, we had a birthday party for Jesus! We spent Christmas day in our pajamas opening (and playing with) presents all day long and enjoying our favorite foods and each other.” Kathy continued explaining her family’s favorite elements of island living, “Hands down, the VFW is When Derrick McHenry set out to find the perfect spot to propose to then girlfriend Jordyn Boyer, the obvious choice was none other than our own Breach Inlet. Having dated for five years, the pair had frequented the Isle of Palms as visitors once McHenry graduated from the College of Charleston. McHenry explained, “I attended the College of Charleston to obtain my masters in accounting after finishing my undergrad in accounting at The University of Alabama. I lived with my parents on the Isle of Palms and commuted downtown every day. My one year there was cut short in March of 2020 due to COVID and we were remote for the rest of the year.” Boyer continued, describing McHenry’s proposal locale choice, “We both love the beach and he wanted to find a spot with good views. Also, he had to find a place that wouldn’t be suspicious to me so he told me we were going there for a boat tour.” On Dec. 21, 2024, McHenry put his plan into action, complete with hidden photographers to capture the memorable moments on film. Boyer elaborated, “Derrick told me we were going on a boat tour and then to a nice dinner. When we parked at Breach Inlet, we took a little walk on the beach and I saw a heart drawn in the sand. We walked over to the heart and that’s where he proposed.” The lovely couple plan to wed Oct. 25, 2026, at Firefly Gardens in Dallas, Texas. Besides visiting family at least once a year and spending time connecting with them and relaxing on the beach, this adorably energetic duo enjoys all things Meet Your Island Neighbors! Their list of favorites includes riding bikes on the beach, long walks on the sand and in the water, going to the marina to grab lunch and watch the boats and enjoying the spectacular sunsets that blanket the Intracoastal Waterway and Morgan Creek with color and light. Boyer added, “We love looking at all of the beautiful houses here too.” Of course Boyer and McHenry enjoy local cuisine, with Islander 71 and Acme Lowcountry Kitchen claiming the top spots for favorite restaurants to frequent. The soon-to-be-wed couple enjoyed the holiday season last year by venturing into downtown Charleston and enjoying a quiet dinner at Peninsula Grill. Boyer expanded on their holiday adventure, “We walked around and saw all of the lights and Christmas decor. We also visited the aquarium and saw Santa in the big tank.” Cheers to a happy, healthy, long and lovely marriage to the young pair and here’s to many more vacation memories to come on the Isle of Palms. Kathy explained their beginnings, “Mike and I met in Atlanta where he had been living for 20 years. My job was being relocated to Atlanta from New York and they flew me and 14 of my single girlfriends down on an expense account to see if we wanted to move there. Mike’s cousin is married to my brother and she said, ‘Call Michael! He’ll show you all around town!’ And that he did!” Years later, upon moving from New York to the Isle of Palms, Kathy soon discovered that South Carolina was ranked 48th in the nation in education. Kathy felt blessed to learn about the homeschool option and enjoyed every minute of homeschooling her girls through the eighth grade. Jillian graduated at the top of her class from Clemson University with a degree in finance. After exploring options in that field, All photos provided. Continued on Page 25.
