The city, our local Island Turtle Team, the IOP Exchange Club and author Mary Alice Monroe have all teamed up to sponsor and create this fun family activity, called the “Hatchling Hunt.” While on the hunt you get to learn about loggerhead sea turtles and their life cycle. I set off with my family this recent weekend to find them all. First, I visited iop.net and searched the Experience IOP link that features the page for the scavenger hunt. Then I printed out the brochure that lists all the clues for the hunt. You can also go to city hall to get a copy. There are six sculptures of turtle hatchlings spread across the island, which were created by local artist Scott Penegar. We headed down to Front Beach to find all of them along Ocean Boulevard. Hint: There are plaques located near each sea turtle sculpture, so if you can find the plaque, you will know you are close to a hidden baby turtle. Warning: The baby sea turtle sculptures are not all obviously placed, so make sure to look around each area. We had to search several times to find some of those little critters. Once you are done, you can head to city hall for a prize. We got stickers, but they will be restocking the T-shirts this spring, hopefully by April. Happy Hunting!
